What is leadership?
Being a great leader is like being a great parent. And like great parenting, it can be hard to define, partly because a leader’s effectiveness depends on who they are leading. While a particular leadership style might work well with one person, it could be completely ineffective with another. I have two sons and I have learnt the hard way that the strategies that are successful with one don’t necessarily work with the other!
As we move into 2021 and a period of COVID recovery, or at least COVID management, leadership is being recognised as a key contributor to business and professional success. While the execution may differ, it is possible to identify some fundamental principles that strong leaders live by.
Strong leaders:
make decisions that others can’t or won’t make, understanding both the intended and unintended consequences of their decisions.
work to make themselves redundant by training, guiding, developing, coaching and leading those around them
are accountable and can be relied upon to be true to their word
are brave enough to admit their vulnerabilities, failures and mistakes, and to ask for help when they need it
are able to adjust their style to meet people where they need to be met
hear what is said, as well as what is unsaid, and not what they want to hear
understand that leadership is a journey, not a destination, and that continual learning is essential
have a clear vision of the future and are able to inspire others to follow them and their vision
speak directly and with clarity
are kind, empathetic and caring.
Each day, as you move through 2021, think about how you can take one more step towards being a better leader.
