Christmas Career Wish List

What’s on your Christmas list this year? Instead of creating a list of things you want to receive, why not think about creating a wish list for your career instead?

Here are some ideas for what you might include on your Christmas career list.

All I want for my career is …

Opportunities

Whether you’re focusing on your current role or thinking about a change, figuring out just what sort of opportunities you’re looking for is a great place to start a new year. You can put your hand up for a project or promotion, or for overseeing a new team member. Put yourself out there and be alert and open to any opportunities that might come your way.

Learning and development

We should all be lifelong learners, especially when it comes to career development. What areas do you need to work on? In what ways could you improve your skills and knowledge? Find a course, a book or a training program that will help you develop in the ways that you need to take your career to the next level.

A mentor or a coach

Finding someone to guide you through the sometimes difficult twists and turns of your career path can be hugely beneficial. Maybe you’re fortunate enough to have a program in your organisation that you can sign up for. But if not, start researching possibilities and ask your manager if the company will support you being mentored or coached, either internally or externally.

Access to industry insights

Knowledge is power. If you want to get ahead in your career, having access to industry insights is essential. These might come through attending conferences, subscribing to industry magazines or taking opportunities to network with relevant experts. Whatever form it takes, make sure you put this on your Christmas career list.

Time out

It’s often be low down on most people’s list of career priorities but perhaps what you really need is time out from your career. This can take a number of forms, such as a sabbatical, flexible work hours that allow you time to explore other interests, or the chance to spend some time working with a charity. Maybe it is just a long overdue holiday with your family. However you choose to use your time, don’t be afraid to ask for a break if you need one.

With a few days until Christmas, there is still time to write a list for someone other than Santa. Think big and be creative – what do you want for your career this Christmas?

Merry Christmas!
